While already a photographer and music lover, it wasn't until I volunteered at my church as a photographer for the worship team that I really understood how both of my biggest passions could be fused into one. It was at church in these low-light environments that I learned the basics of event photography and learned my camera's low light capabilities inside and out. The advantages of certain focal lengths, camera settings and experimenting with different perspectives, filters & prism glass. It wasn't long before I was emailing solo artists, music festivals and touring managers. The more of them that said yes and gave me a shot, the less afraid I became of the word "no". Years later, I have quietly captured over 400 live music events in Pennsylvania and neighboring Ohio & West Virginia venues. The first photo pass I ever got approved for was for Roger Waters "Us & Them" Tour as a freelance photographer for The Beaver County Times with entertainment writer Scott Tady graciously allowing me to get my first taste of concert photo pit photography. Shout out to Scott for always being so honest & transparent and complimentary about my photo contributions for his column.
My strategy for getting continued work is simple. I may not have the best equipment on the planet, but I put my full heart & soul into every 3 songs or full gig I get accepted to and I deliver on my promise from day one of returning photos of the event within 5 hours or less from the end of the show. I like to strike while the iron is hot as they say, with the raw energy and creative juices still flowing from the show. Sometimes even editing in the parking lot of the venue before heading home.
I am respectful of venue rules and procedures as well as respectful of the performer(s) and audience. I am humble enough to know people aren't there to see me take pictures so I try to stay out of the way and as small as possible (which is easy in a 5 foot 7 frame). If you've made it this far, thank you, I would appreciate the opportunity to capture your venue's concerts on a full or part-time basis depending on need & photo pass availability. I follow & appreciate an expansive variety of music styles and have found that genres outside of my comfort zone have been some of the most rewarding experiences. If you haven't already visited my portfolio, I invite you to peruse through and see if my style and your venue's / artist's needs would make a great team. Thank you for visiting and God bless.
